Built on a bed of gospel-infused contemporary R&B, Elsy Wameyo’s music now thrives in the realm of contemporary rap and hip-hop, with influences of traditional African music. The singer-songwriter-rapper was born in Kenya and migrated to Adelaide with her family at a young age. It was music and her faith that helped Wameyo cope with a sense of displacement she felt being caught between two cultures. Her first studio album Saint Sinner was made in Kenya in 2024, where she discovered a sense of artistic family and, from there, the music flowed into a fusion of Afrobeat, traditional African music, contemporary rap and R&B. She has toured internationally with hip-hop icons Hilltop Hoods and performed alongside the likes of Duckwrth, Sampa the Great, Aminé and Adrian Eagle. Wameyo was a former NSS x WOMADelaide Academy graduate and was 2022’s Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year.
