The Tatana Village Choir is based on the outskirts of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and features Tatana vocalists performing Peroveta, a form of singing that emerged out of the colonisation of Papua in the late 19th century, Peroveta adapted traditional modes of harmony, melody and rhythm as heard in Western hymns, transforming and evolving these sounds into and entirely unique form of choral music – replacing pre-colonial chants and dance as the main mode of expression in community rituals such as marriage, death and birth. Aaron Choulai, Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra and Australian-Papuan pianist and composer, will join as a vocalist in the choir from his home village for this special choral only Peroveta performance.
Tatana Village Choir will also perform on Sunday with The Australian Art Orchestra in Ane Ta Abia.
