Workshop:
This workshop will present a type of traditional dance that has its roots in South Africa’s coastal region, called Ukusina. For the Zulu people, Ukusina is an expressive and rhythmic dance form with deep cultural importance. Traditionally, it was thought that no event would be complete without at least one Ukusina dance performance. Ukusina dance is a fundamental component of the social, religious, and cultural life of the Zulu people. We, as young Zulu men, believe that everyone in attendance will be drawn into a coherent action atmosphere by the intimate relationship between body movement and music, and thus learning our cultural belief, dances and roots. We will also pair the Ukusina workshop with some Zulu songs.
___
The name says it all: this a cappella group brings happiness wherever it performs. The five members met at high school when they all arrived early for choir practice, jammed together, and realised there was something special going on when they sang. In just a few years, they have gained global attention, culminating in performing with Doja Cat on the main stage of Coachella in 2024, and then collaborating with her on three tracks. Their rich, melodic and uplifting music has also captured the attention of artists such as Alicia Keys, Sam Smith and Jennifer Hudson. Following their performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, they released their debut album The Joy in 2024.
