Black Jesus Experience
Ethiopia / Australia
The music of Black Jesus Experience (AKA BJX) delivers an explosive and irresistibly danceable shot of Ethiopian tradition riding on future grooves. Combining Ethio-jazz, hip-hop and funk, this usually 10-piece band reflects the multicultural vibrancy of its hometown of Melbourne, where they appear regularly at cultural hub, The Horn. The band has collaborated with the father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke, and performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Big Day Out and Park Life in the UK. At the core of BJX is singer-songwriter Enushu, who migrated to Australia bringing with her hauntingly beautiful compositions inspired by her life story, and the unique vocal traditions of Ethiopia. Enushu is joined on vocals by Zimbabwe-born, Outback-raised poetic rapper, Mr Monk.
