Tenzin Choegyal
Tibet / Australia
As the son of Tibetan nomads forced into exile, Tenzin Choegyal feels a particular connection to the music of the high Himalayan plateau. One of the world's finest musicians in the Tibetan tradition, he plays lingbu (bamboo flute) and dranyen (three-stringed Tibetan lute), though he is best known for his extraordinary vocal ability and performance of droklu, the nomadic music of his parents. While proudly continuing an unbroken musical lineage, Tenzin also takes his music into more contemporary territory through his many collaborations, including work with Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has performed around the world, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Tenzin will be joined by Metta String Quartet, tailor-made for WOMADelaide and comprising some of Adelaide’s finest classical improvisational musicians.
